Language Deprivation Syndrome: Life Impact and Alternatives
"Language deprivation syndrome" (LDS) as described by Gualti (2003) occurs when a child is deprived of accessible language. Based on the research literature, the lifelong impact of LDS is severe. The syndrome produces deficits in family interaction and closeness, language development , speech communication, educational attainment, literacy development, memory skills, brain development, and employment options. The syndrome also leads to higher than normal percentages of deaf individuals who experience mental health issues, substance abuse, child abuse, sexual abuse, and social, emotional and behavioral disorders. LDS often occurs when oral-only communication is provided to a deaf child. This is due to the inaccessibility of the incoming auditory signal regardless of auxiliary augmentative hearing technology provided. A bilingual approach utilizing spoken English and American Sign Language has proven successful in preventing LDS. The positive effects of this approach will be delineated and discussed.

Dr. Hamilton had worked at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf for thirty years before assuming the position of Senior Research Scientist at Georgia Tech these past nine years. His work focuses on the use of technology to enhance language acquisition and language comprehension.
