Language Outcomes of Latino Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A Multi-State Sample
Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) experience delays in the acquisition of oral speech and language skills. Latinos are the largest ethnic minority in the United States and the largest language minority of children with hearing loss. However, research on speech and language development in Spanish-speaking children who are DHH is still in the early stages. This study aims to identify variables that best predict vocabulary quotients as measured on the Inventario del Desarrollo de Habilidades Comunicativas MacArthur. Participants were 53 Spanish-speaking children who were DHH. All children were between 8 and 36 months of age and enrolled in the National Early Childhood Assessment Project (NECAP). A series of multiple regression analyses indicated that chronological age, degree of hearing loss, functional hearing abilities, and age of enrollment in early intervention, predicted 61% of the vocabulary variance. Children showed higher vocabulary quotients when receiving intervention by four months of age; however, they scored below average when compared to hearing peers. Future research may focus on assessing quality intervention variables that positively affect the language outcomes of these children, providing evidence-based practices to intervene with this population.

Beatriz de Diego-Lázaro is a PhD student in the Speech and Hearing Science program at Arizona State University. She graduated from the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, in Speech Therapy and Linguistics, and from Fontbonne University, St. Louis, MO., with a M.A. in Early Intervention in Deaf Education. She is interested in studying oral bilingual development in children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and in improving early intervention services that facilitate multilingual and multicultural development of children and their families.
