Information Given to Parents of Neonatal-Intensive Care Unit Graduates on Hearing

Many premature infant graduates from the NICU are potentially lost to follow up for audiology after leaving the hospital due to the lack of hearing education prior to NICU discharge. Some parents may be surprised to be notified by their state the need to monitor their child’s hearing because of risk factors they exhibited at or around birth. It is unknown how much information and support related to hearing is provided to parents by hospital staff during or after their child’s stay in the NICU. Using Qualtrics web-based survey software, an online survey was conducted to learn more about the information related to hearing loss presented to parents who have had children in the NICU and examine their perception of level of preparedness to manage health concerns, specifically in regards to hearing, upon discharge. Two hundred and seventy five surveys were completed. Ninety two percent of responses were from the US and twenty six states were represented. International residents from eleven countries also responded to the survey. Based upon the survey findings, this study indicates a need for increased education for the nursing staff that are responsible for discharging parents. Discharge packets should include information about speech and hearing milestones and the risk factors for hearing loss that pertain to their child.

  • 1. Describe the current level of education of hearing loss given out in the NICU.
  • 2. Describe the level of involvement of NICU staff in newborn hearing screenings.
  • 3. Describe the recommendations for education of hearing loss at discharge from the NICU.
