Management of Minimal Hearing Loss: A Team Approach
Infants and toddlers are being fit with hearing aids at younger ages due to the success of newborn hearing screening. NHS continues to consistently identify children with minimal hearing loss and often times hearing aids are recommended. Is a hearing aid always the answer for young ears with minimal hearing loss? If so, how are hearing aids fit appropriately for these children? How is a toddler’s progress with minimal hearing loss monitored over time? What are the risks factors associated with minimal hearing loss? What are recommended follow-up procedures? A pediatric team consisting of professionals and parents is key to positive outcomes. The team approach utilized at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center will be presented. Case studies will highlight to show collaboration as infants and toddlers are monitored over time. The participant will be introduced to the recommended protocol and monitoring system for minimal hearing loss.
- Identify a test battery and protocol included in evaluating infants and toddlers (Birth-3 years) with minimal hearing loss.
- Recognize a team approach (AuD, SLP, EI, and Parents) through the review of specific case studies.
- Gain useful information to guide parents as they embrace the challenges of a young child with a minimal hearing loss.
