Analysis of Initial Newborn Hearing Screening’s Referral Rate According to the Test Days After Birth: Comparison Between Well Newborns and NICU Infants
In South Korea, Ministry of Health and Welfare has supported early newborn hearing loss detection program of lower income class since 2009. Many guidelines recommended that the initial screening should be performed as close to discharge as possible, preferably 12 hours or more after birth. The screening may be performed sooner if needed.The aim of this study is to evaluate the referral rate according to the initial test day after birth between well babies and NICU infants in South Korea.
We adopted a coupon system to track babies. The content of coupon are baby type (well baby or NICU baby), screening tool, birth date, screening result, et al. We collected data of newborns who born in 2015.
The total No of newborns was 68,458, which made up for about 15% of all newborns in 2015. The No. of NICU babies was 2,088 (3.2%). The Average referral rate was 1.5%. The majority of well babies tested within 24 hour after birth (29,309, 44.3%) and that of NICU babies 8~13 days after birth (513, 23.7%). The serial referral rate of well and NICU babies respectively as follows: 0.6% vs 7.7% at within 24 hours, 1% vs 8.6%, at 2nd day, 0.6% vs 2.5% at 3rd day, 0.9% vs 6.4% at 4th day, 1.2~1.3% vs 5.5~8.7% at 5~7 days, 2.0% vs 5.3% at 8-13 days, 3.4% vs 5.7% at 14~20 days, 4.2 vs 9.3% at 21~31 days, 7.0% vs 14.5% at 32~60 days and 13.3% vs 22.1% at more than 61 days after birth.In well babies’ referral rate, that of within 24 hours was the lowest referral rate unlike other reports. The lowest referral rate of well babies might be the repetition of screening test. In all newborns, the referral rate was significantly high in 31 days more after birth.
