Supporting Early Literacy in the Audiology Clinic
Development of literacy skills is a vital step to ensuring academic success. According to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), children with hearing loss are at a greater risk of falling behind in their development of these skills. Additionally, research suggests that children who do not have access to books in the home may not stay in school as long as children who have books in the home (Schubert & Becker, 2010). Early language and literacy intervention is necessary to foster development of literacy skills. These efforts can and should be supported by pediatric audiologists beyond appropriate hearing aid fitting, verification, and validation. This poster will outline the development of a program designed to support early literacy efforts for children with hearing loss via the Audiology clinic. We will describe the necessary steps taken to get much-needed books into the hands of young children with hearing loss and will measure how these early literacy efforts can affect a child’s success with regards to literacy skill acquisition and audiologic management (i.e. datalogging and attendance at audiology visits). We anticipate this program can provide additional support to ongoing efforts by early interventionists while also working to improve comprehensive audiologic care.
