The Application of Korean Aural Rehabilitation for Infants (KARI)

A newborn hearing screening program has allowed of the amplification from very early age and increased need for the structured aural rehabilitation program for infants. Therefore, ‘Korean Aural Rehabilitation for Infants (KARI)’ has been developed through several years and applied. This study was to identify the effect of the KARI program. For KARI, ‘Korean Infant Vocal & Articulation Development (KIVAD)’ list reflecting speech production development of Korean children, and ‘Short Fun Input for Modeling (SFIM)’ have been developed to facilitate auditory and speech development of infants. The KIVAD list helps for professionals and parents identify a child’s articulation developmental stages and target of rehabilitation contents. The SFIM was aimed to the parents’ effective and intensive auditory modeling method. KARI also includes Korean traditional plays and nursing technique such as ‘Dan Dong Sib Hoon’ and ‘Attachment Parenting’ Also, some techniques of Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) was adapted for the contents. Parents’ education and counselling forms have been developed such as ‘Daily/Monthly check form’, ‘Question form’, ‘Try these tips for auditory development of your child’, and ‘How can I talk to my baby in everyday life?’ KARI has been applied to 8 infants who failed newborn hearing screening from July 2015 to July 2016. Four of 8 infants finished the follow up assessment after 9 through 12 months of its application so far. The evaluation of the progress was assessed with the 11 materials for the four different areas. All the infants showed good improvement in the listening and speaking skills. Regardless of type and degree of hearing loss, KARI promoted auditory, language and communication development of infants. KARI would be further refined through the continuing application to more infants with hearing loss, and the infants could start successful listening and speaking development with KARI.
