Photobook of Exceptional Children: Softening the Hearing Loss Diagnosis and Marketing Early Intervention to Parents of Children with Hearing Loss
When a hearing loss is diagnosed, parents are often alone in their shock and grief. This sudden transition to the “new norm” of having a child with hearing loss is unexpected and opens an unknown road and world to navigate. For many parents, no frames of reference exist for this diagnosis, leaving families wondering about the future of their child. In addition, even the most seasoned audiologists may struggle in delivering this news to parents. Early interventionists may have a difficult time convincing and selling parents on the benefits of early intervention when families are reeling from a fresh diagnosis. The benefits of early intervention may not be readily apparent during this intense period of time. In response to this, the book Idaho’s Exceptional Children was created from a mother of three children, two of whom have hearing loss due to Usher Syndrome. This book features twenty children in Idaho; all thriving, achieving goals, overcoming obstacles and demonstrating to parents of newly diagnosed children how bright their children’s future will be. How this book was created and ways it can be used as a tool by audiologists, early interventionists and EHDI programs to ease the diagnosis and market the benefits of newborn hearing screening and early intervention will be discussed. Participants will walk away with a clear outline and steps of how to make their own state’s book of exceptional children.

- Participants will be able to better support families of children with hearing loss with diagnosis and early intervention.

Andrea Amestoy, R.N., has been a pediatric and neonatal intensive care unit nurse and teaches classes at St. Luke’s.
She has worked for the past 12 years at Idaho Sound Beginnings as a parent outreach consultant in which she markets and promotes Idaho Sound Beginnings, gives presentations and contacts parents for follow up.
In addtion, Andrea works for Idaho Educational Services for the Deaf and Blind with children 0-3 who are blind or visually impaired. She earned her Health Science and Nursing Degrees from Boise State University and is a certified teacher of the blind and visually impaired with a Master's in Special Education from Texas Tech University. She recently completed her orientation and mobility certificate from Texas Tech University in August of 2019.
She is the mother of three kids, two of whom have Usher's Syndrome.
