Are "Two Ears Better Than One": An Examination of the Decision-Making Process of CI Audiologists When Deciding on Bilateral Sequential or Bilateral Simultaneous CIs For Their Pediatric Patients
This study was designed to examine the decision-making process of cochlear implant audiologists in the United States who treat pediatric bilateral cochlear implant candidates. An electronic survey was developed in order to identify the most important factors that audiologists consider when choosing between bilateral sequential or bilateral simultaneous cochlear implants for pediatric recipients. The results of the study indicated that all of the participants valued binaural hearing. Additionally, most of the audiologists primarily worked with sequentially implanted patients, and the most common interval between the first and second cochlear implant surgeries was less than one year. Overall, the audiologists were more likely to recommend bilateral sequential to their future patients. This was not to say that the audiologists did not recognize the benefit of bilateral simultaneous cochlear implants. Additional research should be completed to more specifically identify the most common interval for sequential cochlear implants.
- Participants will be able to describe the distinctions among the terms: unilateral, bilateral, bimodal, simultaneous versus sequential Cochlear Implants.
- Participants will be able to list several of the factors CI Audiologists have reported when making a recommendation of simultaneous versus sequential CI/s.
- Participants will be able to detail the current trends in the CI 1 to CI 2 interval for bilateral sequential CI/s.
