As One Door Closed, Another Door Opened: The Congenital CMV Initiative in Connecticut
Abstract:
CMV is the most common congenital viral infection in the United States. One in 150 children is born with Congenital Cytomegalovirus(c-CMV) each year. Congenital CMV is the leading infectious cause of developmental disabilities and hearing loss in children. Despite these numbers, healthcare providers and the general public have limited knowledge about CMV. On January 1, 2016, Public Act #15-10 took effect in Connecticut mandating that infants who fail a newborn hearing screening also be screened for CMV. This law also requires birthing facilities report any cases of CMV to the Department of Public Health. Despite the educational component of the bill not passing, the Connecticut Department of Public Health’s EHDI program was able to partner with Connecticut’s American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) EHDI Chapter Champion to develop various state-specific resources addressing congenital CMV testing and involved many stakeholders to ensure an organized and informed implementation effort throughout the existing public health system. This presentation will provide an overview of Connecticut’s recent CMV legislation and implementation. The collaborators,accomplishments, barriers, preliminary data, educational resources and future ideas will also be discussed.

- Describe the benefits and limitations of testing for cCMV and share preliminary data and CMV resources developed in CT
