How Media Depicts Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, Adults and Their Families: Re-Framing the Possibilities

Often, the first Deaf or Hard of Hearing person new parents meet is their own child. These parents' sense of what it is like to be D/HH or parent a D/HH child often comes from what their limited experience with people with hearing loss, often from media. Historically, the portrayal of D/HH people in the movies, television shows and videos has been negative; broken people incapable of taking care of themselves, society outcasts and isolated from the world. This workshop looks into healthy marketing approaches to inspire new families of D/HH babies? to embrace their child? and their parenting journey with great hopes and dreams. This presentation will review historical and current media framings of Deaf & Hard of Hearing people. It will also highlight the families' perspectives on the benefits of how the media with positive framings have helped them to connect better with their D/HH child. Dr. Julie Rems-Smario, Ed.D works as an Early Language and Education Consultant in California at CORE, California School for the Deaf, a program of State Special Schools and Services at the Department of Education. Julie's work includes working as a co-director of California's Early Hearing Detection and Intervention, training Early Start professionals on how to develop language milestones goals for IFSP/IEP, supervising SB 210 data, developing resources for families of Deaf children, and providing technical assistance to Early Childhood Education professionals. During her free time, she volunteers as one of the Public Relations Director of a national campaign, Language Equality, and Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K).
