Reaching the Hard to Reach Families: Finding New Ways to Connect Using Technology
Families have busy and often complicated lives, and getting our message to those we serve can be a barrier to EHDI stakeholders. Connecting with parents is a top priority for EHDI agencies and family support organizations. Initiating outreach, providing information, and engaging in community are not novel activities, the tools that we use, however, are rapidly evolving and are as diverse as the populations that we serve. This presentation by two members of the Texas Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side Program showcases a variety of technology based tools that have been leveraged to communicate with families in innovative ways. Topics include using multiple approaches, and recognizing issues of access, language, culture and preference in planning and implementing the use of technology-based communication. The Applications highlighted include the use of texting to follow up with families about their babies’ hearing screenings, using Facebook groups and online chats to create a community of families and provide resources, developing Youtube videos that can be delivered to a computer or Smartphone, using social media to promote outreach events. Particular emphasis is placed on effective outreach to families who are Spanish-speaking as well as those in remote areas. Demonstrations will be provided, and participants will be invited to share their own successful strategies.
- Participants will be able to list three considerations in designing a new technology-based outreach strategy
- Participants will be able to describe two novel strategies that could be used in their own EHDI programs
- Participants will be able to identify specific considerations for communicating with Spanish-speaking families.

She is also the parent of two children who are deaf, and supports parent outreach and provider training for Texas Hands & Voices.
