Cochlear Implantation in Children with Congenital Cytomegalovirus

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the leading cause of non-genetic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in the United States. It is estimated that 30,000–40,000 infants are affected each year by congenital CMV infection with approximately 8,000 developing SNHL and/or permanent neurological defects. At our center, children with congenital CMV who receive cochlear implants have shown wide variability in performance. This poster will examine outcomes of cochlear implantation for approximately 75 children with a diagnosis of congenital CMV who received cochlear implants and are currently being followed at the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC. Dependent variables will include birth history, age of diagnosis, age of implantation, type of device, speech perception outcomes, and comorbidities associated with congenital CMV.

  • 1. Participants will be able to differentiate between a symptomatic and asymptomatic newborns infected with CMV.
  • 2. Participants will be able to describe cochlear implant performance in a cohort of children with congenital CMV.
  • 3. Participants will be able to identify comorbidities identified in a cohort of children with congenital CMV.
