An AuD Practicum Experience That Supports EHDI Follow-Up Efforts

State Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Programs continue to seek creative solutions to address lost-to-follow-up issues. Three years ago, Tennessee's EHDI Program partnered with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Department of Audiology to implement an AuD practicum experience that has resulted in a positive outcome for both programs. Select AuD students, with an expressed interest in pediatrics, work under the supervision of an audiologist to meet competencies by conducting telephone follow-up on babies who have referred on their newborn hearing screen. Students have gained meaningful experience as they: connect with and provide support to families statewide; communicate with medical home providers, hospital staff, and audiologists; work collaboratively with agencies to locate difficult-to-find families, manage an internal database, and report findings. The practicum experience model has been expanded to other universities within the state. The components and outcomes of this unique experience will be discussed as well as the perceived benefits from participants.

  • Describe the practicum experience between Tennessee's EHDI Program and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Department of Audiology.
  • Explain how the practicum has changed, since its inception, relevant to the changing needs of the EHDI program.
  • Identify the outcomes and perceived benefits of the practicum experience.
