Data Modernization Efforts using the Annual Hearing Screening and Follow Up Survey
The Hearing Screening and Follow-up Survey (HSFS) is a survey sent out annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to each state and territorial Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program. The survey requests non-estimated, aggregate hearing screening, diagnostic, and intervention information on infants born in a specified calendar year. The information gathered is used to help assess the progress of EHDI efforts to identify and provide services to infants with permanent hearing loss across the United States. However, if these data are not available in an easily accessible and understandable format the usefulness of the information and the potential for it to inform EHDI efforts can be limited.
As an agency, CDC is actively working to support and promote data modernization efforts. This includes exploring new ways of collecting and presenting public health data. Among the available tools we utilize to enhance the communication of our work, Power BI and R Studio offer the ability to display data in interactive and easily digestible ways. This presentation will review changes in the display of HSFS data over time, discuss considerations in selecting data visualization tools, lessons learned, and highlight current efforts by CDC to effectively collect and present a range of HSFS indicators. Sana Charania is an epidemiologist with the EHDI team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sana works to support a wide range of analytic and epidemiologic research projects, including analyses using national surveys, community based studies and individual level data. Sana has a B.A. in Anthropology and Global Health from Emory University, and MPH in Global Epidemiology from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health.

Nafis Khan

Nafis Khan is a graduate student pursuing a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology at Emory University. For his practicum, Nafis volunteered as a student intern on the CDC EHDI team. His project entailed designing and developing an interactive dashboard using HSFS data. Additionally Nafis worked on study reviews and health communication documents. Nafis holds a bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Penn State University. His research interests include, maternal and child health, public health surveillance, and data visualization.

Suhana Ema

Suhana Ema serves as an epidemiologist with the CDC EHDI Team. She is responsible for analyzing EHDI data and disseminating findings with jurisdictional EHDI programs and partners. She also provides technical assistance to jurisdictional EHDI programs to improve their program and tracking and surveillance work. She holds Master of Public Health degree from the University of Georgia. Suhana was born with severe to profound hearing loss on both ears and wears hearing aids. She is fluent in American Sign Language and lipreads well.
