Engaging Families using a Best Practice Resource Tool to Provide Parent-to-Parent Support
The families we serve through parent-to-parent support are culturally diverse and engage in support in many different ways and levels. Therefore, how we support a family must be tailored to meet the unique needs of a family in order to reach positive outcomes. In her 2016 Revised conceptual framework of parent-to-parent support for parents of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing: A modified Delphi study, Dr. Sheila Moodie of Ontario Canada shared information that substantiated the concept of parent-to-parent support and provided constructs central for successful outcomes for new families. The Conceptual Framework constructs and components have since been utilized to guide trained Hands & Voices Parent Guides, DHH Guides and ASTra Advocates to offer unbiased parent to parent support and measure the impact. Presenters, Christine Griffin, WA Hands & Voices and Beth Jones, NV Hands & Voices will share key elements of this Best Practice tool. In addition, they will each showcase from their own experiences of supporting families and their community the different approaches and benefits of using a standardized guidance tool.

Christine is the mother of two deaf and hard of hearing young adults. She's worked supporting parents for the past 17 years and is the program coordinator of Washington State Hands & Voices Guide By Your Side Program.
Over the years, she has worked closely with Washington State's EHDDI program as a parent leader.
Christine earned a Masters of Education in Adult Learning with focus on parents as adult learners.

Beth Jones

Beth Jones is the Executive Director for Nevada Hands & Voices, as well as the Guide By Your Side Coordinator and an Educational Advocate for the ASTra Program. Prior to beginning a family, Beth earned her master’s degree in Special Education and worked as an Autism Teacher and Behavior Mentor Teacher. Beth became involved with Hands & Voices when two of her three children were identified as being deaf/hard of hearing and has been a part of Nevada Hands & Voices since 2012. She serves on many state-wide and national committees, teams, and advisory boards as a parent leader to help advocate and support children who are deaf/hard of hearing.
