NC EHDI Programs that Engage and Empower Families
The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) emphasizes that Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs’ success is reliant on the development of well-coordinated and strong parent-professional partnerships working towards a shared goal. It is important for families to be trained, empowered, and engaged as partners in the development of the EHDI system of care that is designed to address their family’s needs. The NC EHDI Program aspires to empower families of children with hearing loss by increasing parent engagement throughout the EHDI system. NC EHDI has cultivated a variety of environments that allow families to engage with other parents as well as professionals. This presentation will highlight some of our family support services that encourage collaboration, leadership, and advocacy opportunities: The Parent Support Team, Monthly Family Focus Email, Virtual Parent Learning Experiences, Family Fun Days, CARE Connect Facebook Live Collaboration, Virtual Parents as Collaborative Leaders Training, and a Parent Professional Collaborative Workshop.
- Participants will be able to discuss the importance of family support for families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH).
- Participants will be able to describe the importance of family engagement in EHDI programming.
- Participants will be able to describe the role collaboration plays in making new programming successful.

Lara Pike

Lara Pike attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington where she received her Bachelor of Social Work degree. She has worked as the Main Office Coordinator for The CARE Project for over 4 years and recently became the Director of Logistics. During her time with The CARE Project, Lara has coordinated events across the country such as weekend family retreats, professional development, parent professional collaboratives, virtual family retreats and virtual learning experiences. Lara and her husband initially became involved with The CARE Project in 2015 after their daughter was born with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. She lives in Wilmington with her husband, Adam, and seven year old daughter, Hollis.

Daphne Peacock

I was born deaf to hearing parents. We were fortunate to be living in Chicago at the time when Northeastern University housed an awesome Early Intervention program which also offered parents sessions on varying hearing loss topics and sign language classes. The program had an impact on my future, as well as my parents being heavily involved. I attended a school for the deaf and public school. I graduated from the University of Rochester and Gallaudet University. I teach grades 3-8 science at the North Carolina School for the Deaf. I am also a mother of a ninth grader son who has bilateral cochlear implants and communicates in spoken English and American Sign Language.

Jenna Rankin

Jenna Rankin is the Parent Consultant for North Carolina EHDI. She also has a young daughter who is deaf. She holds a degree in elementary education and spent six years teaching in public schools before transitioning to her current role in the EHDI program.

Marcia Fort

Dr. Fort is the Genetics and Newborn Screening Unit Manager in the Whole Child Health Section of the North Carolina Division of Child and Family Well-Being and serves as the NC EHDI Coordinator. Marcia has worked with the NC EHDI program since 2002. Dr. Fort has 32 years of experience as a pediatric audiologist in hospital, private practice, ENT office and public school settings.

Jude Williams

Jude has worked with the NC-EHDI Program for 13.5 years. Jude has her BS in Biology and MPH in Health Behavior/Health Education.
