Is My Baby On Track? A retrospective analysis of newborn hearing screening results and follow up within the well-baby population.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship among factors such as birth weight, method of delivery, sex, and zip code on passing the universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) prior to discharge from the hospital. Per EHDI 1-3-6 guidelines, all newborns should have a completed newborn hearing screening prior to 1 month of age. An analysis was completed to determine the average age of the patient for the outpatient appointment for babies who referred unilaterally or bilaterally on their UNHS. This analysis demonstrated how successful the UNHS program at the University of Chicago is at meeting the 1-month milestone. The study provided insight on barriers to achieving the 1-month milestone for our patient population. An interprofessional team at University of Chicago was formed to bring awareness and education regarding cCMV and hearing loss. The team began offering a CMV saliva swab to all babies who referred on their newborn hearing screening. This new implementation was evaluated for percentage of CMV swabs offered following referral on the newborn hearing screening and percent of positive CMV swabs reported. Inclusion criteria for this study included full term well babies that were discharged from the Mother-Baby Unit.

  • The learner will discover potential relationships between different factors and their impact on passing the UNHS prior to discharge.
  • The learner will evaluate the compliance rate for UNHS completion by 1 month of age for babies who refer on their UNHS for the University of Chicago.
  • The learner will identify the barriers to an outpatient hearing screening by 1 month of age.
