Supporting Families When They Go Off The Beaten Path
Like all communities, the deaf/hard of hearing community is diverse and dynamic. When a family has a newly identified deaf/hard of hearing infant or child, they are faced with a huge amount of information and have to make choices. Processing the information and making immediate decisions can be overwhelming and it is important that the family makes decisions that make the most sense for their family system. It is important to support families in making the right choices for their family at that moment, always understanding that people and families are dynamic and families and children evolve. Sometimes families choose a mode of communication, a piece of technology, or an educational setting that you have no resources for or experience with. We will discuss what professionals and families can do to support one another when parents make choices that take them off the beaten path.
