Optimizing hearing and communication in healthcare and education encounters
Hearing loss compounds many of the hearing -related challenges that everyone faces in with the ubiquitous utilization of facial masking and social restrictions during COVID-19 crisis and adds additional ones. Hard of hearing people already struggled with communication in the pre-COVID-10 world. Improved awareness and active use of communication strategies among early intervention providers will result in effective family-provider communication which is the basis of good patient care and family satisfaction. With the quick expansion of telemedicine during this COVID-19 pandemic, we must ensure that patient safety, comprehension, and access to quality health care are maintained for patients and family members including the hard of hearing population.
At UCSF, we have developed an awareness, education, and best practices guidelines for care of patients with hearing loss with collaboration from various teams including care providers, information technology experts, patient experience team members, patient advocates and liaisons. We will review our learnings, outcome, and impact of this work.

Payal Anand
(Primary Presenter), University of California San Fracnisco, payal.anand@ucsf.edu;
Payal Anand is the director of the Audiology Clinic and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the
Department of Otolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery at University of California, San
Francisco. Her professional interests include diagnostic audiology, aural rehab, hearing devices,
vestibular evaluation, and patient education. Dr. Anand supports a compassionate advocacy
approach to care and is particularly passionate about helping her patients and their families
come to a better understanding of the impact of hearing loss and their management options.
She is actively involved in mentoring and training students and residents. Dr. Anand is licensed
by the State of California in audiology and hearing aid dispensing, holds certification in
audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is a fellow of the
American Academy of Audiology. Dr. Anand is a proud mom of three little munchkins, who areall growing up quickly.
