Autism and Hearing Loss: Getting More Out of Your Audiology Report
Statistics show that 1 in 59 children with hearing loss are diagnosed with autism, and children who are diagnosed with a hearing loss usually have a delayed autism diagnosis of approximately 2 years. Many times, these children are seen by an audiologist first, making such audiologists a vital part in screening for autism and developmental delays in the clinic, as well as providing the necessary referrals for further evaluation, when needed. This task can be daunting, especially for audiologists in rural states, such as Wyoming, where resources are sparse. Through the use of a universal template that can be utilized by audiologists with available and reliable referral sources for autism screening and evaluation, children can receive appropriate diagnosis and intervention, in a timely manner.

Kalley Ellis is the audiologist for the Wyoming Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program, as well as a working as the clinical audiologist in her practice in Casper, Wyoming, working solely with the pediatric population. Kalley received her Bachelor of Science degree in communication sciences and disorders from Utah State University. She then received her Doctorate in Audiology from Idaho State University in 2019.
Kalley has been with the Wyoming EHDI program since 2019, and her duties include training and supervision to nursing staff and midwives on NBHS protocols and procedures; training child development centers throughout the state on late onset hearing loss screening protocols and procedures. In her clinical practice, Kalley sees children birth-21 years of age and provides newborn hearing screenings, diagnostic hearing evaluations, as well as hearing technology fittings and follow up.
Lastly, since September 2021 she has participated in the LEND program through Colorado, where she has been working to expand her knowledge and expertise in working with children with neurological disorders, as well as to provide more appropriate resources for Autism screening and evaluation to families in Wyoming.

Sandra Gabbard is an Associate Professor of Audiology at the University of Colorado where she is the Coordinator of the Pediatric Audiology LEND MCHB training grant, which supports AuD students and post-doctoral audiologists to expand their expertise in pediatric audiology. In addition, Sandra is the CEO/President and audiologist at the Marion Downs Center, a non-profit community clinic which provides services in audiology, speech therapy, and more.
