Thinking outside the box of the traditional model of parent to parent support. How a parent to parent podcast highlighting parents sharing their personal journeys can help educate and empower parents.

Raising a Child with Hearing Loss was launched during the pandemic to provide a virtual community to support parents while in person services weren’t available. The Podcast is a FREE, non-commercial podcast providing a forum to connect parents and providers. The target audience is hearing parents who have a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. The secondary audience is all providers who provide services and support to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. This platform allows a busy parent to access information at their own convenience and during normal daily activities like while exercising, household chores, or commuting. Parents who have had the opportunity to share their personal stories in a meaningful way have found the experience to be very healing and supportive. Listening to parents stories in an easy to access format for providers, they are better able to hold space, identify gaps and difficulties in accessing service, understand their words matter, build empathy for parents' lived experience, and be able to share with parents additional ways to access parent to parent support. Parent to Parent support is critical for best outcomes.

  • Parents who have had the opportunity to share their personal stories in a meaningful way have found the experience to be very healing and supportive.
  • By listening to a parent’s story where gaps and difficulties in accessing services are discussed, providers will be able to hold more space for parents, understand how much the words providers use matters, build empathy for the parents’ lived experience, and be able to share with parents additional ways to access parent to parent support.
