EHDI MAID – A Deaf and Hard of Hearing Journey in a Mobile Application
The journey from newborn hearing screening to managing their medical home has long been a challenge for families with a child who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Knowing their child’s next step in the diagnostic process through entry into Early Intervention is often confusing for parents who are unfamiliar with hearing loss. Once a hearing loss is identified, juggling a schedule with multiple professionals including their Audiologist and Otolaryngologist and Primary Care Physician and Speech-Language Pathologist and Part C Early Intervention Provider and Deaf Educator and Parent-to-Parent Support and Deaf Mentor is a challenge for even the most organized parent.
EHDI MAID (Early Hearing Detection and Intervention – Mobile Application Idaho) will assist parents in understanding which professional they need to see, as well as when and where their next appointment will be. When a hearing loss is identified EHDI MAID will facilitate the organization of the professional and support team that will help their child develop language and communication skills. EHDI MAID will also function as a document repository where the parent can store documents relevant to their child’s development such as meeting notes with providers, audiograms, IFSPs, Speech-Language Evaluations, etc. In later versions of EHDI MAID, providers will have the ability to request documentation and communicate with other professionals serving on their client’s medical team.
This presentation will give a brief overview of the app functionality and display the updates that have been implemented in the past year.

Brian Shakespeare has worked for Idaho Sound Beginnings since 2011; starting as the Data Manager and being promoted as Program Coordinator in 2014. He received his Baccalaureate of Science in Psychology from Boise State University in 2009. Following graduation he worked with children with developmental disabilities for two years, eventually becoming a Certified Behavioral Interventionist. Brian’s major accomplishments with Idaho Sound Beginnings include receiving the Outstanding Organization of the Year Award from the Idaho Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, overseeing data linkages between HiTrack, Idaho’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Information System, and the databases of both Idaho Vital Records and ITPKIDS, Idaho’s Part C database, as well as implementing process improvements in screening programs and audiology clinics across the state. Brian enjoys playing soccer, rock climbing, and taking his two Boston Terriers to the park to play Frisbee golf.
