Title: Working Together: The Information Exchange Between Families, Pediatric Audiologists and Early Interventionists to Maximize Outcomes
Primary Track: 2-Audiological Assessment and Intervention
Keyword(s): Collaboration Partnership Communication Audiologists Early Interventionists Families

Abstract:

The outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing are optimized when families, audiologists, early interventionists, and other pertinent professionals work collaboratively to customize intervention in order to suit the individual needs and abilities of the child. All too often, a child’s outcome suffers from what may best be referred to as the Cool Hand Luke dilemma. In the classic movie set in a Florida prison camp, the prison warden explains an apparent injustice to prisoner Paul Newman by uttering the now infamous line, “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.” In spite of the obvious overlap in services provided between pediatric audiologists and early interventionists, professionals of the two disciplines frequently fail to communicate with one another about the needs and abilities of a child with hearing loss. This presentation by a pediatric audiologist and early interventionist will provide practical suggestions for how families, audiologists, and early interventionists can partner with one another to maximize the speech, language, and auditory skills of a child with hearing loss. This needed information exchange between professionals will be specified. The pediatric audiologist will describe how to more effectively communicate with families and early interventionists to promote the speech, language, and auditory outcomes of a child with hearing loss, while the early interventionist will describe ways in which the early interventionist can enhance and support audiologic intervention. Specific questions and the type of information will be detailed to provide participants with a ready action plan to implement in their setting. Video tape excerpts will be shared to demonstrate a parent, pediatric audiologist and early interventionist working together to maximize outcomes for children with hearing loss.
