Abstract: |
Congenital CMV is second only to genetics as a cause of hearing loss in children. An international conference on congenital CMV held at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in November 2008 will for the first time bring together international experts to discuss the public health implications of the disease and its detection, management, and prevention. New information will be presented at that conference on the status of vaccine development, communication strategies for the prevention of transmission of CMV infections during pregnancy, the epidemiology of congenital CMV, including its association with hearing loss, and the development and validation of dried blood spot screening tests which might be used to screen infants to either monitor them for the onset of hearing loss or to administer drugs that might potentially prevent hearing loss from developing. This session will present highlights from the conference presentations as well as panel discussions relevant to Early Hearing Detection and Prevention and childhood hearing loss. |
