Title: Small Talk – Developing, Implementing and Facilitating a Parent-Toddler Group
Primary Track: 3-Early Intervention
Keyword(s): parent-toddler teaming audiologist speech-language pathologist

Abstract:

The importance of parents’ participation in the intervention process of their child who is deaf or hard of hearing has been well documented. To provide families with increased opportunities to practice auditory teaching strategies, the team of speech-language pathologists and pediatric audiologists at Hearts for Hearing has developed and implemented a weekly parent toddler group. As a result, families participating in the parent toddler group have developed a better understanding of the use of hearing technology and troubleshooting, auditory teaching strategies and their use during small learning groups. Parents report that an additional benefit of the parent-toddler group is the support and encouragement from other families of children with hearing loss who are also navigating the path of teaching their toddler to learn to listen and talk. In this presentation a speech-language pathologist and pediatric audiologist will provide insights and suggestions to develop and implement a successful parent-toddler group. Video tape segments from the parent-toddler group will be shared as well as tips from the trenches for facilitating parents and children in a group setting. The importance of teaming between families, speech-language pathologists, and pediatric audiologists to support young toddlers with hearing loss in a small group setting will be emphasized. When we work together to encourage “small talk” in parent-toddler groups - everyone benefits.
