Dr. Diana Poeppelmeyer is currently the Director of the Educational Resource Center on Deafness at Texas School for the Deaf. She has experience teaching at the parent-infant, preschool, middle school, high school, and university levels and has coordinated numerous conferences, workshops, and retreats related to the education of deaf and hard of hearing children. Her current primary interest is helping families become equal partners in the educational process.

Abstract: |
Learn about the FamilySigns project to provide in-home sign language instruction for parents of deaf children through videophone technology. A brief background of the pilot project and first family will be shared followed by a description of the current service to a number of families, the components of the program, and the benefits of using Videophones for early family instruction in sign language. Specific strategies for supporting family participation will be discussed. The education/business collaboration that makes the project possible will be explained, including the partnership with VRS interpreters volunteering as instructors. Finally the challenges and limits of the current model will be shared. |
