Title: Using The Listening Room to Create Listening and Language Opportunities in the Child’s Home Environment.
Primary Track: 3-Early Intervention
Keyword(s): Listening, Web Resource, Language, Early Intervention

Abstract:

Learning how to listen and develop language naturally begins at home. As parents we must understand our role in fostering a successful path towards the development of communication in our infant or young child. However, for a parent of a young child with a hearing impairment this can be a challenging task. Many parents feel poorly equipped on how to teach their young child their natural language now that they have learned about the child’s hearing loss. However, research suggests that learning to talk should occur in the child’s natural environment – their home and it is the parent(s) who should be the primary facilitator. The Listening Room is a web resource that provides FREE habilitation activities for the development of speech and language in young children. This site was developed for parents, therapists, teachers and other professionals who support children with a hearing loss. The different areas within the Listening Room are designed to provide the parent or professional with effective activities and resources on how to stimulate listening and language in a young child throughout his day. This presentation will discuss the variables to consider in setting the stage in a child’s home for creating effective listening and language activities and opportunities. We will examine the stages of normal speech and language development and how to apply these stages to children with a hearing loss. Finally, we will explore the activities and resources that are available within the infant and toddler section of The Listening Room. At the completion of this course parents will feel empowered to work with their young hearing impaired child in the home; and the professionals will have information needed to guide their families towards the successful development of listening and language skills.
