Title: Indiana’s EHDI Alert Response System (EARS): Incorporating Follow-up Protocols and Collaborating with External Organizations

Abstract:

Last year, we presented the EHDI Alert Response System (EARS), a web-based application that allows Indiana NBS staff the opportunity to view entries made by hospital staff and audiologists in almost real-time and generates an alert to the appropriate staff member when an action needs to be taken. Since our last presentation, we have had to address a few unexpected challenges, including incorporating follow-up protocols, coordinating alerts and incorporating input from external users into the system. In this presentation, we will discuss: the follow-up protocols that have been incorporated into EARS; how we are currently managing the alerts the EARS is generating; how the EARS allows for timely communication and follow-up among external partners; and how the web-based EHDI application is improving tracking and follow-up for babies residing in Indiana. The presenters will share examples of effective strategies for communication within EARS, provide case studies that demonstrate the dance between alerts and responses which is based on a child’s initial and ongoing status, and provide protocols that minimize loss to follow-up and increase the rate of early and accurate diagnosis of hearing loss. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to participate in this interactive presentation through a group activity and question and answer periods.
