Presenter 1: Name: Gayla Hutsell Guignard

Affiliation:

Gayla Hutsell is the EHDI Coordinator for Indiana's EHDI Program. Gayla has extensive experience as a pediatric audiologist, speech-language pathologist and also a LSLS Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. Gayla is a consultant with the NCHAM Network and is also the current chair of ASHA's Division 9 Steering Committee (Childhood Hearing and Hearing Disorders).
Presenter 2: Name: Patti Martin
Affiliation:

Patti Martin is the Director of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH). Her areas of expertise include infant screening/assessment, family support and program development. Her efforts with infant hearing screening began with a collaboration project to investigate the efficacy of TEOAEs as a newborn screening tool in the early 1990s and continue through her work on the board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Special Interest Division on Childhood Hearing Disorders and as the Family Support Consultant for NCHAM. She has chaired the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Speech Pathology and Audiology, as well as the Arkansas Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, Tracking and Intervention Board. Currently, Dr. Martin co-chairs the 4th National Family Support Conference scheduled for October, 2008. Dr. Martin’s ongoing passion centers around how professionals can help support families in improving the outcomes of children with hearing loss.

Title: “The Best Laid Family Support Plans: Lessons learned from State Teams”

Abstract:

Participants from the 2006 and 2007 Investing in Family Support Conferences were interviewed regarding implementation of their State Family Support Plan. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis was used to determine common themes among states. Recommendations for effective State Plan implementation will be shared based on these findings. Examples of 2008 State Plans will be shared to demonstrate improvements due to incorporating strategies for optimizing family involvement and support. Technical assistance with State Plans will be provided through the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management.
