Abstract:

The convergence of early hearing detection, use of advanced hearing technology, and early intervention has created new opportunities for learning and communication acquisition in young children with hearing loss. At Utah State University, a new program, Sound Beginnings, has been created to meet the diverse needs of young children with hearing loss and their families. Within the model, a transdisciplinary approach to service delivery has been developed. With the parents/caregivers as the primary decision-makers, professionals -- such as early interventionists, teachers of the deaf, speech-language pathologists, and audiologists -- must work as a cohesive team to meet the individual needs of each child with hearing loss and their family. In this presentation, an overview of the Sound Beginnings model, a description of the transdisciplinary operational structure, and recommendations for replication of the model will be presented.
