Title: Integration of Intervention Services in the British Columbia Early Hearing Program
Primary Track: 3-Early Intervention
Keyword(s): Integrated Intervention Family-Centred Canada

Abstract:

Previously the focus of many EHDI programs has been on the “audiology” aspects, with less attention to the “intervention” aspects. Developing intervention standards and integrated systems can be impacted by differing communication methodology philosophies. In British Columbia, parents and service providers collaborated to develop a “made in BC” integrated intervention system. In preparation, a comprehensive review of the literature, visits and consultation with programs and international experts, and stakeholder meetings were completed. Through consensus-building, key stakeholder groups developed province-wide intervention standards and guidelines. These standards and guidelines include: an integrated family path, operationalized family-centered care, core assessment tools and schedules, a 21 month review, Individualized Family Service Plans for infants with hearing loss, and evidence-based decision making and informed choice guidelines. Informed Choice research has indicated that families want full-information about all service and communication options. Our stakeholder meetings revealed that this was not consistently happening for families in B.C. As a result the British Columbia family path now includes a provincial-centralized referral process and initial information/support provided to families, and training for interventionists and audiologists. An exciting side-benefit has been increased communication, understanding and mutual respect between interventionists representing the range of communication methodology. This presentation will provide participants with a roadmap for building consensus and developing an integrated intervention system.
