Abstract: |
To make informed decisions about communication choices, families must receive unbiased information about all available choices. According to the 2007 Joint Committee on Infant Hearing Principles and Guidelines, families should be made aware of all communication options and available hearing technologies. Additional publications address this issue including the CDC brochures “Questions You May Want to Ask Your Child’s Audiologist/Early Interventionist/Speech-Language Pathologist”. In Meeting the Needs of Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Educational Services Guidelines, the National Association of State Directors of Special Education state that “Early intervention programs should provide parents with sufficient information about the range of options so that parents can make qualified decisions in the best interests of their child.” The issue becomes who is providing this information, how is it being provided, and where professionals obtained this information? To ascertain the answers to these questions in the State of Kansas, a questionnaire was developed. This questionnaire was sent to diagnostic Audiologists and the 36 Infant/Toddler networks. The results of the survey will be presented as well as statewide implications. |
