Abstract:

'We Just Happen to be Deaf' is a new video conveying the story of a U.S. family who views themselves as simply typical. The two parents and the two teenagers each have different amounts of hearing; use different communication approaches and prefer different technologies. Their strong spirit of harmony and happiness emphasizes that Deafness is only a small part of who they are as individuals and as a family. Their unique history contrasts choices parents make over generations and compares successful outcomes. This forty minute film, co-produced by a documentary film maker and a Deaf educator, provides multi-faceted perspectives useful to families and service providers. Session participants will discuss how the sharing of positive stories can highlight useful information and promote family strengths. Viewers can review their reactions and discuss involvement of persons with hearing loss in aspects of their EHDI programs. Please note this could fit under other tracks!
