Title: Deaf & Hearing Siblings: Parent Perspectives on Keeping Everybody Sane
Primary Track: 6-Family Issues
Keyword(s): Siblings, Family Support, Parent Involvement, Social/Emotional Issues

Abstract:

On any given day, siblings in a family typically experience each other somewhere along the continuum of bonded friendship to deep-seated rivalry (and everything in between). What happens when the family isn't 'typical' but has both hearing and deaf children? Every aspect of parenting and interpersonal relationships in the family dynamic can be affected--often in ways totally unforeseen. What do hearing sibs say about their experience growing up with a brother or sister who can't hear normally? How do deaf or hard of hearing kids feel about their hearing sibs? This session explores sibling issues with an emphasis on the 'aha' moments parents have discovered along the way, and just a few 'don't try this at home' cautionary tales as well.
