Abstract Information:
Title: Wanted: Pediatric Audiologists!
Primary Track: 1-EHDI Program Enhancement
Keyword(s): Pediatric Audiology

Abstract:

Wanted: Pediatric Audiologists! Because of increased advances in early identification and the ever changing challenge of technology, the need for clinically trained and skilled pediatric audiologists continues. This session, presented by both graduate AuD students and their mentors, highlight a collaboration between an AuD program and offsite placements to increase graduate student exposure to pediatric audiology through various clinical and community outreach opportunities. A series of rotations were designed beginning with the first semester of graduate school that highlight components of the EHDI system and seek to engage the students early in their academic career to work with the pediatric population. Experiential learning opportunities range from screening in an NICU to involvement with a parent support group to serving as a counselor during a camp for kids who are D/HH. Additionally, a focus on understanding systems and policy-making may lead to student involvement in tracking and reporting activities to the statewide EHDI program, participation in advocacy training or serving as an observer at a statewide Advisory Board meeting. Evaluation of the impact of this initiative will also be shared, as well as continued expansion plans to include educational audiology experiences. Results have been very encouraging and include pre- and post-survey regarding changes in interest and knowledge about pediatric audiology.
