Abstract:

When a family has a child who is identified with hearing loss, they suddenly find themselves facing many decisions. Families need to start thinking about how they will communicate with their child, will the child receive hearing aids or a cochlear implant, what services are needed by the child and family, where do they go to get these services. Many times these decisions are made in a very short time period. Some decisions made are beneficial to the child and family and some decisions will be changed. This session will explore how families make decisions, what are the driving forces behind these decisions, where do families get their information, what is the best way to give families information and when is the time for families to receive information.
