Title: Remodeling a Local EHDI Program
Primary Track: 1-EHDI Program Enhancement
Keyword(s): follow-up, roadmap, local

Abstract:

The Colorado Infant Hearing Program has been in existence for 16 years. Every hospital has a newborn screening program. But why is the follow-up for rescreens, diagnostic evaluations, and entrance into early intervention not meeting the recommended guidelines by JCIH in every hospital? A comprehensive analysis of the Colorado EHDI program provided the needed insights into factors that prevent an infant from receiving a newborn hearing screen prior to and after hospital discharge. The analysis allowed the EHDI staff to develop a strategic plan for improvement across the state. Each community is different in their demographics (population, culture, available resources) and has its own challenges when it comes to developing an EHDI program that ensures a comprehensive EHDI system. Consequently, each community in Colorado is developing a local EHDI team comprised of stakeholders similar to the state advisory committee. Providing technical assistance and support from the State EHDI staff in collaboration with Regional Hands & Voices, Early Intervention and Audiology Coordinators at the local level, has proven to be an exciting opportunity to break down the old walls and create new opportunities. Identifying gaps, barriers, and lack of resources has allowed the local EHDI teams to develop new plans to improve the infrastructure of their system so no family or child falls through the cracks. Developing the local Blue Print or Road Map for providers and families allows everyone to know what the next steps are in the process, to ensure a timely and appropriate follow-up system. Each presenter will describe her role in providing expertise and guidance to the local EHDI teams.
