Title: The Alaska EHDI and Bloodspot Database Integration Project
Primary Track: 5-Follow-up, Tracking, and Data Management
Keyword(s): information management, data management, follow-up, tracking

Abstract:

In January 2008, the State of Alaska enacted a legislative mandate for newborn hearing screening. At the same time, the state expanded the web-based database to electronically import newborn bloodspot results from the Oregon Public Health Laboratory and link them with newborn hearing screening results. The integration provided an opportunity to have a child-centric record that maintained information on both programs. The integration of an information management system for NBS and EHDI functions as a cross-check for State, hospital staff and community-service providers who participate in both child health programs. As child health staff prepared for the integration, they identified data elements to use when matching newborn dried bloodspot screens to hearing screening data. With the development of the system, processes were modified in both programs to ensure confidentiality of health data for each program. As the process continued, modifications were made to the information system to meet the needs of the program staff. This presentation will review the lessons learned and the steps and occasional missteps taken, and make recommendations to facilitate integrating these public health information systems. This evidence supports the importance of integrated newborn hearing and bloodspot screening data management which helps ensure newborns receive screening and follow-up for both programs.
