Abstract:

What can we do with babies? As speech-language pathologists, audiologists, educators of children with hearing loss, early childhood interventionists, working with babies is still a relatively new frontier. When families first enroll their baby with hearing loss in intervention, most think 'What can a therapist possibly do with my baby? My baby is deaf, why should I talk to him? She can't hear me, why should I sing?' Parents and caregivers are lost and overwhelmed with the advent of a new baby, exclusive of the hearing loss. And now, there is therapy, new skills, more professionals. Auditory-Verbal therapy emphasizes and centers around teaching the family, using natural spoken language, how to facilitate the development of listening and speaking. We start with babies - even before they get their hearing aids - and their parents, giving them the skills and confidence to talk to and interact with their baby. This presentation will offer practical strategies, activities, and resources for the professional and parent to use with children birth to 18 months in a spoken language approach. Video clips of parents, therapists, and their babies will be used to demonstrate how these strategies can facilitate development of listening and speaking skills, achieving developmental synchrony, for children with hearing aids, and pre-cochlear implant.
