Title: Monitoring Infants at Risk for Late Onset Hearing Loss: Who and Why?
Primary Track: 2-Audiological Assessment and Intervention
Keyword(s): risk factors for progressive hearing loss

Abstract:

The Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) first proposed the use of high risk indicators in 1973. Changes in neonatal care and research have since led to the inclusion of additional risk factors. In the era of Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, these indicators remain important to identify children at risk for late onset hearing loss. The 2007 JCIH position statement acknowledged the potential burden imposed by recommendations for monitoring all infants with a NICU length of stay greater than 48 hours. The 2007 position statement decreased the frequency of recommended monitoring, and increased the length of NICU stay as a risk indicator to greater than 5 days. We aim to assess the impact of inclusion of NICU stay greater than 5 days compared to use of condition-specific factors (ECMO, ototoxic medications, assisted ventilation, etc) on identification of delayed onset hearing loss and numbers of infants requiring monitoring. Data from a retrospective review of 5200 NICU graduates from the University of Michigan Medical Center will be analyzed.
