Abstract: In June 2008, a panel of experts met at the NHS2008 Conference (Como, Italy) to discuss and debate issues relevant to identification and management of infants and young children with auditory neuropathy. This meeting, sponsored by the Bill Daniels Center for Children’s Hearing, The Children’s Hospital – Colorado, resulted in guidelines for screening, diagnosis, and early intervention for infants with this diagnosis. In this plenary session, speakers will describe the complex nature of the disorder and identify the challenges of screening newborns for auditory neuropathy. A brief overview of the guidelines generated following the June 2008 conference will also be presented.

Learning Objectives:

Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. describe the range of hearing abilities in children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, and
  2. identify the challenges associated with screening newborns for this disorder.
