Abstract:

A Review of Cochlear Implantation in the Georgia Medicaid Population Track: Program Evaluation and Quality Assurance Authors: Miller GM, Chelton LG, Choate S, Ariail D, Pedelty P. Affiliation: Georgia Medical Care Foundation, Atlanta, Georgia The Georgia Medical Care Foundation, as the utilization management review agent for Georgia Medicaid, has examined the experience with cochlear implantation over an almost 5 year span. We undertook this review as part of a Surveillance and Utilization Review Subsystem(SURS) study to investigate the appropriateness of patient selection and the compliance with recommended post-surgical mapping and follow-up in Georgia Medicaid fee for service members. One hundred and twenty eight (128) members met the criteria for record review with dates of service from January 1, 2004 through November 31, 2009. All met the prior approval criteria established by Georgia Medicaid and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Sixteen (12.5%) were found to be poorly compliant with prescribed follow-up. Twelve members (9.4%) required replacement of their implants either due to malfunction or complications. Twenty nine members (23%) had bilateral implants at the time of study completion. We will present the results of this comprehensive retrospective review, and offer recommendations for improving post-surgical compliance and subsequent outcomes. Presenter: Gary M.
