Abstract:

This presentation will deliver the message that parent to parent support is essential in understanding the complex systems in our society and making changes for improved outcomes, especially when a family has a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. If we truly want to make a difference for families then we must embrace the idea of parents as leaders. Being a leader can take on so many different faces! It can be as simple as talking to another parent about experiences with their child and what they might do in certain situations to as complex as scheduling time to visit the state or national capital and speak with legislators on issues that need to be addressed for hard of hearing and deaf children. Some of the early parent leaders in IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) will be highlighted and there will be opportunities for small groups to come up with ideas for leadership opportunities in their own communities. It all starts with a belief that we can make a difference!
