Abstract: |
Studies conducted by Moeller as well Yoshinaga-Itano suggest that successful language growth of young children with hearing loss is attained when early identification is paired with early interventions that actively involve families. John Tracy Clinic (JTC) has designed a parent education/support program focused on strengthening family participation in their child’s language learning both in intervention and home activities. An aim of state EHDI programs is to identify children early so parents can make decisions to support their child’s early development. But families and service providers report few parent education offerings available at night and locally thus limiting the opportunities for family involvement. Presenters will report on a pilot parent distance education program via live video conferencing between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. A year-long series of topics and activities were designed to help parents overcome the barriers to their child’s language acquisition. The pilot goals were to share expertise across the miles, offer instruction from staff onsite, provide support from a parent leader off site and disseminate information (in English and Spanish). Much of the parent class material applies to any communication approach but because JTC’s expertise is in spoken language the examples given relate to listening, language and speech. The process though is one any state program could take and apply for collaborating on enhancing parent education in the EHDI system, increasing family involvement in intervention and improving outcomes for young children with hearing loss.
This presentation will:
Describe the mentoring process for support leaders to facilitate parent education groups;
Explain the teaching strategies used to encourage family involvement and carry over at home;
Discuss the barriers to providing EHDI parent training that is personal even when it is distance;
Review the parent perspectives of how early intervention training increased their involvement.
