Abstract:

The Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is designed in partnership with a family’s early intervention providers to support a child in Part C. Basic IFSP documents and meetings sometimes exclude the conversations that should occur to ensure communication considerations for a child who is deaf/hh. This presentation will introduce a new document, The IFSP Communication Plan produced by the CDC Parent-to-Parent Subcommittee that has previously created other support documents for families (i.e. “Questions to Ask Your Audiologist”). This tool can be used by any family and IFSP team in the country to help facilitate and document important considerations such as: The language and modality of the child and family; Supports needed in order for families to serve as language models; considerations of assistive technology; opportunities for direct communication with peers/role models; unique qualifications needed by service providers; supports necessary to access community opportunities. This document is based off of the highly successful IEP Communication Plan developed as a result of the Deaf Child Bill of Rights in Colorado.
