Abstract:

The ability to express and understand language and to be able to communicate is essential to our lives. Regardless of how a family chooses to communicate, a deaf or hard of hearing child should have as much access to language as possible. This means effort on the parents’ part, to ensure that the child has all the resources needed for linguistic achievement. However, the responsibility is not solely that of the parents’. EHDI programs need to be tailored towards greater parental involvement. Based on actual parental experiences, this workshop will present different ways that EHDI programs can help parents be more involved with every aspect of their young deaf or hard of hearing child’s language acquisition. Examples include discussing language acquisition with EDHI specialists, participating in the child’s individualized plan, and doing independent research. Additionally, this workshop will provide insight on how EDHI programs can be improved to involve parents by fostering more solid relationships with parents At the same time the workshop will emphasize the importance of the parents being proactive in their children's lives so that they will acquire strong language and communication skills.
