Abstract:

Audiologists have a well-deserved reputation for writing reports that only other audiologists can fully understand. Physicians, early intervention providers, parents and other non-audiologists have expressed considerable frustration with not being able to understand what is being reported. This session will present several alternative methods of reporting and encourage professionals to write reports that are more understandable and informative. One of the reporting alternatives, dubbed the “four paragraph report,' has been shown to be particularly effective. Through group discussion and small group activities, we will examine several current reports and revise them to be considerably more understandable and readable. Although this discussion will be primarily concerned with audiological reports, participation by parents and other service providers will help provide the input necessary for reports to be relevant to them.

Les Schmeltz - NCHAM

      Dr. Schmeltz is an associate professor of audiology at A. T. Still University and Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention. He has served as Editor of the NCHAM E-Book since it's inception in 2010. He is a past-president of the Educational Audiology Association.
Karen Markuson Ditty - NCHAM
     Credentials: Au.D.,CCC-A Board Certified in Audiology
     Other Affiliations: Newborn Intensive Care Specialists,P.A.
      Dr. Ditty is a pediatric audiologist with extensive experience and expertise in EHDI programs. Her career spans over 30 years and includes leading and implementing EHDI activities in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and in the Houston and Dallas areas of Texas. She is the former Director of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge, and continues to oversee hospital programs in the Houston and Dallas areas of Texas. Dr. Ditty has been associated with NCHAM for more than 15 years as a member of the Technical Assistance Network and coordinates the NCHAM national pediatric audiology diagnostic workshops. She also works on a variety of projects related to early childhood screening and pediatric audiology such as the Newborn Hearing Screening Training Curriculum and issues related to program quality, financing and sustainability. Dr. Ditty has authored and contributed to publications related to EHDI at local, national and international forums.
