Abstract: |
In an effort to improve the quality of the newborn hearing screening program in Iowa, Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program staff conduct hospital site visits with birthing hospitals. Each hospital receives a periodic visit, regardless of performance on progress reports, where best practices and areas of improvement are identified and technical assistance is provided. Before each visit the hospital must complete a self-rating rubric which is reviewed during the site visit. The self-rating rubric allows the hospital to rate themselves on implementing the EHDI law and rules, hearing screening protocol, how they are notifying physicians and other quality measures that impact the EHDI program. With the diversity of hearing screeners, a parent is part of the EHDI site visit team and shares a personal story on the importance of hearing screening with the hospital staff. Iowa has completed this process with 40 hospitals and this session will provide lessons learned in conducting hospital site visits. Preliminary evaluation of Iowa EHDI site visits indicate that after a hospital receives a site visit, refer rates improve and hospitals implement process improvement activities for their newborn hearing screening program. This presentation will review the process that the Iowa EHDI program uses, including the use of a hospital self rating rubric, to conduct a hospital site visit and the purpose of visits and outcomes related to the visit. Materials used during the hospital site visits will be shared with session attendees. |
