Track: 2-Audiological Assessment and Intervention
Audience: Primary Audience:
Secondary Audience:
Tertiary Audeince:
Keyword(s): Title V CSHCN, follow-up screening, direct service delivery, monitoring and management
Learning Objectives: This presentation is designed to show how a CSHCN agency may support UNHS and serve as a point of entry into an intervention system appropriate for infants and children with hearing loss. After attending this session participants will be able to describe how interagency collaboration promotes newborn hearing screening and appropriate intervention beyond screening in Alabama. Participants will also be familiarized with a model of direct service delivery which incorporates early hearing detection and intervention with on-going monitoring and management as required.

Abstract:

In Alabama the Department of Public Health (ADPH) administers all aspects of the Title V program for the state, except the services for children with special health care needs (CSHCN). Children’s Rehabilitation Service (CRS), a division of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, is the lead agency for these services. CRS supports UNHS by working with ADPH to provide 2nd tier follow-up screening for infants referred from the initial screening, reporting the results to public health through an electronic database. Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) audiologic equipment has been purchased using a recently acquired ADPH UNHS grant. The units have been distributed to 7 local community based offices and will be used to provide second tier follow-up screening for babies who refer to CRS from their initial screening. The purchase of this equipment allows CRS to be in compliance with the JCIH 2007 Position Statement: Principles and Guidelines for Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Programs. CRS audiologists also have the capacity to provide follow-up management for infants and children needing further assessment and hearing aid selection and fitting subsequent to UNHS. This presentation is designed to show how a CSHCN agency may support UNHS and serve as a point of entry into an intervention system appropriate for infants and children with hearing loss. After attending this session participants will be able to describe how interagency collaboration promotes newborn hearing screening and appropriate intervention beyond screening in Alabama. Participants will also be familiarized with a model of direct service delivery which incorporates early hearing detection and intervention with on-going monitoring and management as required.
